Thomas S. Tooma, MD, has personally performed more than 100,000 successful LASIK surgery procedures. In fact, he has helped hundreds of other doctors obtain clear vision through LASIK surgery, including 250 eye doctors. Dr. Tooma earned his Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry from Loma Linda University and his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Loma Linda School of Medicine. He performed his internship in general medicine at the Loma Linda University Medical Center, his residency in ophthalmology with the Loma Linda University Department of Ophthalmology and a fellowship in corneal surgery and external disease with the Emory University Department of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Tooma has been a principal investigator in LASIK research and has helped several excimer laser manufacturers obtain FDA approval for their lasers. He was the first doctor in California to perform LASIK and among the first to perform custom wavefront-guided LASIK. Dr. Tooma has performed more Custom LASIK procedures using the Alcon LadarVision laser than any surgeon in the world. In addition, he was one of the first surgeons in the world to use the Femtosecond laser (IntraLase FS30).
Dr. Tooma has held numerous university and hospital positions, including Chief, Director of Cornea Service and Director of Refractive Surgery in the Department of Ophthalmology at Loma Linda University Community Hospital. He has given back to the community by volunteering with Project Orbis, participating in medical teaching missions in Romania, Bulgaria, China and Fiji. He and his wife founded the Mission at Natuvu Creek in Fiji, which serves 250,000 people with medical, dental and eye care provided by visiting physicians.
Dr. Tooma has been board certified in ophthalmology for more than 25 years. He is affiliated with many professional organizations, including the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the International Society of Refractive Surgery, the Castroviejo Corneal Society and the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
