David R. Shapiro, MD, earned a degree in medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine and completed an ophthalmology residency at the University of California, Davis (UC Davis). Following his residency at UC Davis, Dr. Shapiro spent two fellowship years studying refractive surgery under the distinguished J. Charles Casebeer, MD, often referred to as “the father of modern refractive surgery.” He is one of only 14 surgeons in the world to have studied in an extensive one-on-one fellowship under the direction of Dr. Casebeer.

Dr. Shapiro remains dedicated to advancing the field of ophthalmology and laser eye surgery, regularly teaching other eye doctors. He has taught advanced refractive surgery techniques to more than a thousand eye surgeons from around the world and has been invited to teach at a variety of prestigious universities, including Stanford University, UC Davis, UCLA and UC Irvine. In addition, Dr. Shapiro has been invited to lecture on refractive surgery at several conferences hosted by prominent ophthalmology organizations, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Shapiro has served as an investigator for several FDA clinical trials on LASIK vision correction for nearsightedness and astigmatism and was an integral contributor to the design of several microsurgical instruments for LASIK and radial keratotomy (RK).
